DIY Stenciled Tray With Silk All In One Mineral Paint.

I love trying out new products and using new paint colours! I was thrilled when Dixie Belle launched their new Desert inspired Silk All In One Mineral paint colour palette and new stencils from the Belles & Whistle line.

Silk All In One Mineral paint is so easy to use. It has a built in topcoat, primer, stain blocker and leaves a beautiful, smooth finish.

This tray I found at a garage sale needed a little love. It is the perfect project to try out a new colour and stencil on. Here are the materials and steps you need to know to try this out on your next project.

Materials

Step One
First, give your tray a good clean with White Lightning to remove any oil or residue. Next, use a sanding pad and give it a quick scuff sand. Then, use a damp shop rag and wipe off any residue.

Step Two
Start by giving your paint a good shake to mix up the pigments. Use a dry synthetic brush and apply the paint in long strokes. Avoid overworking the paint. Continue painting until the whole tray has one coat. Pro tip - To help make it easier to paint the tray, use a couple of paint pints to lift it off the table. This will help avoid any missed spots or drips.

Let the paint dry for approximately four hours.

After four hours apply another coat and let dry for two hours.

Step Three
First start by planning where your stencil will go on your tray.

Next use painters tape to hold the stencil securely in place. Make sure to pencil in the circles on the right and left corners of the stencil. This will help you place the stencil in the right spot to create a pattern repeat if needed.

Step Four
Once the stencil is securely in place use a small stencil brush and dab a small amount of paint.

Using a Shop rag and dab off most of the paint. Having a small amount of paint on the brush will help avoid any paint from bleeding through the stencil, resulting in cleaner lines.

Start by gently dabbing the paint at the top of the stencil, use one hand to hold the stencil in place. Slowly move over a small section of the stencil. Continue adding more paint, dabbing off excess and gently dabbing on the stencil.

Continue this step until the whole stencil has been painted. Apply another coat of paint if needed. Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.

Step Five
To add another section with the stencil, use the pencil to shade in the holes to line up the next section. Once the circles line up start stenciling.

Continue with step four until the next stenciled section is complete.

Step Six
A top coat is not needed with Silk All In One Paint, however since I used Chalk Mineral Paint in Drop Cloth for the stencil, I applied a thin coat of flat Clear Coat with a synthetic brush.

Once the Clear Coat was dry I applied another coat and let it dry.

Using a stencil is a great way to elevate the look of your project. Mojave, an earthy, grounded colour is right on trend for 2022. Make sure to try out Silk All In One Mineral paint and new stencils on your next project!
