How To Decoupage With Dixie Belle Decoupage Rice Paper.
Looking for a new technique to try out on your next DIY project, then try out Decoupage. Decoupage is a technique where you apply paper to a surface using an adhesive medium. It is a great way to make a big impact on your next DIY project.
I was thrilled when Dixie Belle recently released their gorgeous Premium Rice Decoupage Papers from their Belles and Whistles line. I had the perfect project to try them out on. Here are the steps and materials I used so you can try out this technique on your next project too.
Materials
Dixie Belle paint in Bunker Hill Blue & Cotton
Step 1
I gave this cute table a quick prep. I lightly scuff sanded, cleaned with White Lightning and then wiped off any residue with a damp cloth.
Step 2
I used the Colourful Tiles Rice Decoupage paper for my table top and paired it with Bunker Hill Blue. They paired beautifully together. I painted the table in 2 coats of paint.
I wanted to keep the crispness of the beautifuls colours of the Decoupage paper. I painted the table top in white so the brightness would come through the paper.
Step 3
I used 2 decoupage papers and trimmed them to fit the table top. To help with my paper placement, I added a faint line with my pencil on my table top to help guide me.
Step 4
I gently stirred my Satin Clear Coat and began applying a thin layer in the area where I was going to place my first decoupage paper.
Moving quickly, I placed my first paper on my table. I was able to gently adjust the paper to get it to the right spot.
I smoothed out the surface with my hand, removing any wrinkles and bubbles. Make sure to be gentle so your paper doesn’t tear.
Occasionally I reapplied the Clear Coat in some areas if it dried or was not adhering. For the remaining section of my table, I added Clear Coat and applied my paper following the same steps as my first section.
Step 5
I removed any wrinkles, making sure the whole paper was adhering to the table top. I applied Clear Coat over the whole table top.
What I loved about these Rice papers is once the Clear Coat is applied, it saturates the paper giving it better adhesion to your surface. Once dry I applied another coat. You can also use Gator Hide if you want a more durable, water repellent finish.
I ended up carefully cutting off the excess paper I had on the sides of the table with an exacto knife for a more defined table top. I applied a thin coat of Gold Digger on some of the details to make them pop.
