How To Easily Paint Fabric With Dixie Belle Paint.
Paint can help make incredible transformations. It can take a tired, outdated piece of furniture and transform it into a gorgeous, swoon worthy statement piece. Did you know that you can also use it to transform fabric? I love painting fabric, it is so easy to do.
I found this cute little stool ready for an update on one of my trips to my local thrift store. The fabric was in good condition but it was very outdated. Here are the materials and steps you need to know to paint fabric on your next DIY project.
Materials
Step One
Since the fabric was clean, it only needed a quick wipe down with damp cloth. If your fabric requires more of a cleaning, just use a gentle dish soap and a scrub brush to clean it and let it dry.
Step Two
I used the Continuous Spray mister to spray water on the fabric to help open up the fibre to take in the paint. Make sure your fabric is damp and not soaked. For heavier fabric piles, you may need to give it a little extra mist of water.
Step Three
I used Sea glass from Dixie Belle Paint, a gorgeous soft green with a hint of blue. Using my Belle brush, I applied the paint directly onto the fabric. I applied the paint in a back and forth motion, moving from one side to the other. This helped the paint go on smoothly and avoided any brushstrokes. After I completed painting the whole seat I left it to dry.
Step Four
After a couple of hours the paint was dry. Before applying another coat, I gently sanded the surface to give it a smooth finish. I applied another coat of Seaglass, occasionally misting with my Continuous spray mister to help get a smooth finish. Once I completely painted the seat I left it to dry.
Step Five
The final coat dried within an hour and had amazing coverage, only requiring two coats. However you may need to do another coat of paint or two to get full coverage if you are using a light paint colour over a dark fabric.
I gave it a light sand and then sprayed Easy Peasy spray wax over the entire seat, spreading it with a shop rag. Make sure to shake your wax well first. It was dry in 30 minutes and completely cured in 6 hours. You can apply another coat if needed.
Step 6
I prepped and painted the remainder of the stool in 2 coats of Putty. Once dry I applied Best Dang Wax in brown to give it some depth and softness.
