Transform A Kitschy Thrift Store Find Into A Primitive Patina Bowl.
I love big transformations! I was thrilled when I found this bowl on one of my trips to my local thrift store. I have wanted to try out Dixie Belle Patina products and this bowl was the perfect piece to create a dramatic transformation. Dixie Belle Patina products will transform decor and even furniture into a rusty, aged look.
Here is how I transformed this bright, kitschy bowl into a Primitive inspired patina effect using Dixie Belle Patina products.
Materials
Bowl
Wax paper
4 Natural bristle paint brushes
Step One
Clean your bowl with White Lightning to remove any grease or residue.
Step Two
Since this bowl was ceramic, I applied a thin layer of Slick Stick over the whole bowl to help the paint adhere. After 2 hours, I applied another coat and let it sit overnight.
Step Three
I poured a small amount of Collard Greens paint onto the wax paper. I mixed approximately half a scoop of Sea Spray into the paint until it had a peanut butter consistency. Using a natural bristle brush, I applied the paint in a cross hatch pattern. Click here to watch a video on how to apply your paint in a cross hatch pattern. I wanted lots of texture to give the bowl a very rustic feel. Once dry, I gently dry brushed Pine Cone around the bottom of the bowl to add some definition.
Step Four
I shook the Iron Patina paint very well and dabbed it along the edging of the whole bowl.
I used Bronze Patina paint dabbing it around the bottom of the bowl, leaving a slight space from the Iron. Make sure not to mix the two Patina paints together.
Step Five
After the paint was dry, I dabbed another coat of Iron Patina paint over my first coat. Working in small sections (approximately ¼ section of the bowl), while the paint was still wet, I sprayed the Patina spray into a cup. Using a brush I dabbed the green patina into the Iron paint. By applying it with a brush, I was able to control the application and give it a different look. I continued to complete the rest of the bowl, alternating between spraying the green patina in some sections and dabbing it in others.
I followed the same steps, apply the Bronze paint and alternated between spraying and dabbing the green patina. Then I waited for the transformation to begin!
What I love about the patina is how it can transform beautifully over time.
Shortly after applying the green patina
4 hours later- I decided to add some Iron Patina paint in the center of the bowl and after the second coat I sprayed the Patina spray, letting the puddle slightly. I left it to dry overnight.
After 24 hours
Step Six
After 24 hours there was quite a transformation. To add some depth and showcase the gorgeous orange tones of the rust, I used a small brush to lightly blend a small amount of black Gilding Wax around the edges of the patina areas.
I was so amazed with the transformation! From a kitschy thrift store bowl, into a gorgeous, heavy patinated bowl that looks like it has aged over 100 years. I love using the Patina products and watching how it would continue to transform over several hours.
