Black & White Jewelry Box With Vintage Floral Transfer.
Dixie Belle transfers are a great addition to your refinished furniture projects, but did you know that you can also use them for small decor items? You can make a dramatic impact and have some fun by adding them to your decor.
I found this tired jewelry box while thrifting. I knew it would be a great piece for a transfer to elevate the whole look. Here is how I transformed it and what you need to do it yourself.
Materials
Dixie Belle paint in Fluff & Peony
Dixie Belle Pearlescent glaze
3 or 4 brushes that are various sizes
Step One
The most important step is to properly prep your piece first. I gave my jewelry box a quick scuff sand with a sanding pad and then cleaned it with White Lightning. I wiped it down with a damp shop rag and waited until it was dry.
Step Two
I applied Slick Stick to help the paint adhere since the box was very glossy. I applied one coat and waited 2 hours until it was dry. I applied another coat and let it dry overnight.
Step 3
Since I wanted a bold, dramatic look, I went for a classic black and white palette so the transfer would be the focal point. I painted the jewelry box in Fluff, a crisp, bright white. Once it was dry, I added another coat.
Step 4
I applied the Pearlescent glaze in long, even strokes to add some shimmer. I gave it a good shake and applied it in long, even strokes over the whole box and let it dry overnight.
Step 5
I began cutting out the transfers and planning my placement. A great tip when figuring out placement is to use tape to hold your transfers in place giving you an overall visual of how it will look. Just make sure to leave the white backing on when you are planning so the adhesive backing doesn’t stick.
Once I was happy with my placement, I removed the white backing and gently rubbed the transfer into place. Using the applicator, I rubbed and burnished the transfer for a few minutes. I gently removed the adhesive film and continued to rub the transfer as I pulled it back. Once the transfer was on, I gently smoothed it out with my hand.
I continued adding transfers until I was happy with the result.
Step 6
I sealed my transfers with a flat Clear Coat over the whole jewelry box. Once dry I applied another coat.
Step 7
Nothing goes better with black and white than metallic gold. I used gold gilding wax on the handles and the wire screen on the doors. I painted the sides of the drawers in Peony to give it a fun pop of colour. I waited overnight for it to dry and put the drawers back in.
That is it! What a great transformation from tired and brown to a fresh, bold design! Make sure to try out Dixie Belle transfers and make a big impact on your decor. Happy painting!
